1. After the Institution: Will Cyberspace Replace Gallery Space?

This is not intended to be an account of art on the internet, although some examples will be cited to illustrate the concepts addressed. Instead, it discusses how the internet can play an important role in aiding the communication of ideas and discussion about art to a global audience, with particular reference to the idea that works that are deemed worthy for contemplation are determined by the institution.

It describes the institutional theory of art put forward by Dickie that is still the most influential theory of art today, and looks at the problems this theory faces within the current political and economic world. It continues by exploring whether the internet can be used as a tool to overcome any of these issues.
