Biography

Statement

The work looks for a truth that may exist in the precarious balance between order & chaos. Abstract geometric works begin with structured patterns to which deviations are brought as the painting develops, bringing chaos into order until balance is found. Structure, order and chaos are counterpointed in the dialectics of the grid. The historical context of de Stijl - its utopian idealism, use of the grid and reductive aesthetic are evoked in this attempt to build the reduced grid back up again with a language that is aware of postmodernity whilst keying into modernist ideas.

Developed in parallel to these abstract geometric works are paintings in which the imagery is taken from magazines, films, advertising and the internet. Most recently the work focuses on painting the portraits of avatars from online virtual worlds. The romantic modernist ideal of a gestalt vision is applied to explore the impact of the database model of knowledge that is replacing the sequential, cinematic narrative of the 20th century, in which we navigate our own path through a vast array of imagery and knowledge enabled by the development of communication technologies.
